Privacy Policy
Last updated: 14 July 2026
Zuma App ("Zuma", "we", "us") helps you stay informed about your local area in
Nigeria — community updates, weather hazard alerts, polls, discounts, and an SOS
tool. This policy explains what information we collect when you use the app and
how it's used.
Information We Collect
- Account details: your phone number (used as your account's
identity key), and optionally your name and email address.
- Location: your state of residence, and — only if you grant
location permission — a precise GPS coordinate captured the first time it's
needed (e.g. for the Weather tab or SOS). This lets hazard alerts target your
actual area instead of your whole state. You can update or clear this from
your profile at any time.
- Emergency contacts: names and phone numbers you add for the
SOS feature (up to 3).
- Content you post: microposts (text, category, optional
photo, optional location tag), poll votes, confirm/dispute votes on other
users' posts, and content reports you file.
- Device push token: a Firebase-issued identifier for your
device, used to deliver notifications (weather alerts, replies, admin
broadcasts). You can disable most notification categories in-app.
- Usage data: which posts and alerts you've viewed, so we can
show unread counts and avoid repeat notifications.
How We Use Your Information
- To operate the core app: feed, polls, discounts, weather hazard alerts, and
the SOS tool.
- To deliver push notifications relevant to your state and interests via
Firebase Cloud Messaging.
- To moderate content — reviewing reports and removing content that violates
our Terms of Service.
- We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for
third-party advertising.
Third-Party Services
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (Google): delivers push
notifications to your device using your device's push token.
- Open-Meteo: your coordinates or selected state are sent to
Open-Meteo's public weather API to fetch forecast data. See
open-meteo.com
for their terms.
- Cloudflare R2: stores photos you attach to posts.
- Your device's SMS app: the SOS button opens a prefilled
message in your phone's own messaging app. Zuma does not send, receive, or see
the contents of that message.
- News publishers: National News articles open in an in-app
browser pointed at the original publisher's site; their own privacy practices
apply there.
Data Storage & Retention
Your data is stored on servers we operate and is retained for as long as your
account is active. If you delete your account or request deletion (see
Contact below), your profile, posts, votes, and device tokens are removed,
except where we're required to retain limited records for legal or
moderation purposes (e.g. content already reported or under review).
Your Choices
- Location permission can be denied or revoked at any time in your device
settings.
- Notification preferences (aside from severe weather hazard alerts) can be
adjusted or turned off in the app's Notification Preferences screen.
- You can edit your profile or remove emergency contacts at any time.
- You can request a copy of your data, or request that your account and
associated data be deleted, by emailing us (see Contact).
Children's Privacy
Zuma App is not directed at children and is not knowingly used to collect
information from children under 13.
Security
We use industry-standard measures (including HTTPS in transit) to protect your
information, but no method of transmission or storage is 100% secure.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy as the app's features evolve. Material changes will
be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date.
